This specimen was lot 34210 in Heritage sale 3042 (Long Beach, September 2015), where it sold for $1,116.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "Maria II gold 2500 Reis 1838 AU53 NGC. A very scarce offering with a mintage of just 1,114 pieces. Some surface marks noted, yet a pleasing portrait and highly sought after." This is the rarest of three dates struck for Maria II, each a different catalog number: 1838 (KM 475), 1851 (KM 487) and 1853 (KM 489). This specimen sold for a third of its catalog value.
