Portugal 1837 1000 reis
This specimen was lot 42534 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it sold for $3,600. The catalog description[1] noted, "PORTUGAL. 1000 Reis, 1837. Lisbon Mint. Maria II. PCGS MS-62. A difficult crown to locate in grades of Mint State, this nearly-Choice offering delights with deep gunmetal gray toning and some enchanting iridescence upon each side." Shown is a silver thousand réis or coroa of 1838; the overdate is not noted in the SCWC. It was struck 1837-38, 1844-45 in very limited numbers. Maria II reigned 1834-53 after overcoming the usurpation of her uncle Miguel I. The next silver coroa struck (KM 539 of 1898) was only 25 grams.
