This specimen was lot 43282 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $504. The catalog description[1] noted, "PORTUGAL. 400 Reis, 1836. Lisbon Mint. Maria II. PCGS MS-64." This type was struck 1833-37 during the reign of queen Maria II (1834-53). The 1837 is the rare date. This coin is the closest thing to a crown issued by Portugal during this period. The 400 réis or pinto was struck until 1837, when Portuguese currency was reformed and decimalized. At that time, this coin was replaced by a 1000 réis piece weighing 29.6 grams.
