This specimen was lot 50597 in Ponterio sale 168 (Philadelphia, August 2012), where it sold for $708. The catalog description[1] noted, "PORTUGAL. 1,000 Reis, 1844. NGC MS-61. Attractive with light toning." Shown is a silver thousand réis or coroa of 1844. It was struck 1837-45 in very limited numbers. Maria II reigned 1834-53 after overcoming the usurpation of her uncle Miguel I. The next silver coroa struck (KM 539 of 1898) was only 25 grams.
Recorded mintage: unknown but common for the type.
Specification: 29.6 g, 0.917 fine silver, .872 troy oz ASW, 36.5 mm diameter.
