Stack's Bowers February 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 74480

This specimen was lot 74480 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $384. The catalog description[1] noted, "PORTUGAL. 200 Reis, 1843. Maria II. NGC AU-55. A charming wholesome example of this low-mintage type. The lightly toned surfaces retain a lustrous sheen and strong details." This type, the first of its denomination, was struck 1836, 1838, 1841 and 1843 only and none of the dates are common. The next issue was in 1854, when the weight was reduced to 5 g.

Recorded mintage: 1,181.

Specification: 5.92 g, 0.917 fine silver, .147 troy oz ASW, 24 mm diameter.
