This specimen was lot 73424 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, June 2020), where it sold for $480. The catalog description[1] noted, "PORTUGAL. 400 Reis, 1828. Miguel I. PCGS MS-62 Gold Shield. Light, gunmetal gray surfaces combine with some subtle golden tone and underlying brilliance. A light degree of haymarking is noted, though entirely consistent with the type and in no way distracting." The 400 réis or pinto was struck until 1837, when Portuguese currency was reformed and decimalized. At that time, this coin was replaced by a 1000 réis piece weighing 29.6 grams. This type was struck 1828-34 for Miguel I, brother of Pedro IV. He was ousted in 1834 in favor of Pedro's daughter, Maria II.

Recorded mintage: 135,000.

Specification: 14.7 g, 0.917 fine silver, 35 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM 386.
