UBS sale 85, lot 1243

This specimen was lot 1243 in UBS sale 85 (Zürich, September 2010), where it sold for 325 CHF (about US$371 including buyer's fee). The catalog description[1] noted,

"PORTUGAL Pedro IV. 1826-1828 Cruzado novo 1826. Fast FDC."

This one year type, tho it has a substantial mintage, lists for more than those which preceded (KM 358) and succeeded it (KM 386). The 400 réis or pinto was struck until 1837, when Portuguese currency was reformed and decimalized. At that time, this coin was replaced by a 1000 réis piece weighing 29.6 grams.

Recorded mintage: 259,000.

Specification: 14.7 g, 0.917 fine silver, 35 mm diameter; this specimen 14,58 g.
