This specimen was lot 35233 in Ponterio sale 177 (Chicago, August 2013), where it sold for $717. The catalog description[1] noted, "PORTUGAL. 40 Reis (Pataco), 1826. NGC AU-50 BN." This type, a forty réis or pataco was struck 1826-28 and is scarce in nice condition. These heavy bronze coins received much abuse and are normally found in low grade. King Pedro IV was the erstwhile Emperor of Brazil who returned to Portugal to defend the rights of his daughter (who would become Maria II) from the designs of his brother Michael. Decimal coinage was introduced in 1837.
