This type, a forty réis or pataco was struck 1826-28 and is scarce in nice condition. These heavy bronze coins received much abuse and are normally found in low grade. King Pedro IV was the erstwhile Emperor of Brazil who returned to Portugal to defend the rights of his daughter (who would become Maria II) from the designs of his brother Michael. Despite the large mintage, this type is scarce.
Recorded mintage: 1,447,000.
Specification: 38.2 g, bronze, 36 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM 373, Gomes 01.04 (dots on both sides of date) or 02.03 (no dots, shown here).
