SB0123-23474r.jpg

The second specimen was lot 23474 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $1,920. The catalog description[1] noted, "PORTUGAL. Pinto (400 Reis - Cruzado novo), 1807. Lisbon Mint. Joao as Prince Regent. NGC MS-65. Surpassed in the NGC census by just a single specimen, this dazzling Gem--emanating from a scant one-year issue--offers a sharp, wondrous strike along with enticing brilliance and an appealing hue to the tone." This one year type, struck just before the Napoleonic invasion of Portugal, is scarce. The silver pinto (KM 331) is much more available.

Recorded mintage: 8,857.

Specification: 1.072 g, 0.917 fine gold.

Catalog reference: Fr-127; KM-341.
