This specimen was lot 43269 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $1,140. The catalog description[1] noted, "PORTUGAL. Escudo, 1807. Lisbon Mint. Joao as Prince Regent. NGC AU Details--Obverse Spot Removed." This one year type is rare. Escudos or 1600 réis were issued only sporadically and in small numbers. In 1807, João VI was still Prince Regent for his demented mother; he became king on her death in 1816. The last peça was struck in 1835 during the reign of Maria II; decimal coinage was introduced in 1837.
