Heritage sale 3042, lot 30351
Portugal H3042-30351r.jpg

This specimen was lot 30351 in Heritage sale 3042 (Long Beach, September 2015), where it sold for $1,997.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "João as Prince Regent gold 1/2 Escudo (800 Reis) 1807 MS63 NGC, Lisbon mint. Three-year type. Elite quality for this short-lived issue, with lively radiance over both sides and no singular marks to speak of. In our opinion, finer than the 1805-dated ex. Eliasberg NGC MS64 of this type that we sold in 2013, as a result of a much sharper strike on the present piece that emboldens the details of the central design." This three year type is scarce. Half escudos or 800 réis were issued only sporadically and in small numbers. In 1807, João VI was still Prince Regent for his demented mother; he became king on her death in 1816. The last peça was struck in 1835 during the reign of Maria II; decimal coinage was introduced in 1837.

Recorded mintage: 5,253.

Specification: 1.79 g, 0.917 fine gold.

Catalog reference: KM 337, Gomes-28.03.
