This specimen was lot 12465 in Ponterio sale 177 (Chicago, August 2013), where it sold for $1,821. The catalog description[1] noted, "PORTUGAL. 3,200 Reis (1/2 Peca), 1818. NGC AU-58. VERY RARE. Mintage of only 100 pieces." This type was issued in small numbers 1818-23; the 1822 is the most common date. The last half peça was struck in 1831 during the usurpation of Miguel I; decimal coinage was introduced in 1837.
