This specimen was lot 74476 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $288. The catalog description[1] noted, "PORTUGAL. 12 Vintens (240 Reis), 1819. Lisbon Mint. Joao VI. NGC AU-58. A lovely example of a SCARCE type, displaying subtly rubescent toning on its bright, lustrous surfaces. The details are perfectly struck and exhibit only faint signs of handling. This highly original piece is sure to suit the quality-conscious collector of Portuguese silver issues." This type was struck 1818-22 in small quantities for João VI. Tho marked 200 réis, it traded for 240 réis. This denomination was terminated in 1830. When the 200 réis was resumed in 1838, it was a decimal coin weighing 5.92 g, reduced to 5 g in 1854.
