Stack's Bowers February 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 74477
SB223-74477r.jpg

This specimen was lot 74477 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $720. The catalog description[1] noted, "PORTUGAL. 80 Reis, ND (1816-26). Lisbon Mint. Joao VI. NGC MS-65. A fairly RARE and seldom seen type that lacks a date (but clearly emanates from the period of Joao's full rule as king), this attractively toned minor presents a rather sharp strike with great underlying brilliance. A great opportunity for the advanced collector of Portuguese issues more broadly, or those of Joao VI more narrowly. Ex: Dr. Roger R. McFadden Collection." In a quaint tradition from the sixteenth century, the small silver coins (50, 60, 80 and 120 réis) of Portugal were not dated and can only be attributed to a reign. To confuse matters, the listings in the SCWC are garbled. For the LXXX réis, we note the following:

  • KM 314, João VI as regent, obverse legend "JOANNES ET ALG", date range 1799-1816;
  • KM 315, João VI as regent, obverse legend "JOANNES P REGENS", date range 1799-1816;
  • KM 352, João VI as king, date range 1799-1816, should be 1816-26, shown here;
  • KM 375, João VI, date range 1816-26, should be 1826-28 for Pedro IV;
  • KM 383, Miguel I, large crown;
  • KM 384, Miguel I, small crown.

The low value copper coins were dated in the usual manner.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 0.917 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM-352; Gomes-J6.09.01.
