Stephen Album internet sale 28, lot 1109

This specimen was lot 1109 in Stephen Album internet sale 28 (Santa Rosa, CA, July 2024), where it sold for $288. The catalog description[1] noted, "PORTUGAL: João VI, 1816-1826, AR 50 reis, ND(1816-26), also known as a 1/2 tostão, struck slightly off center, PCGS graded MS63, ex Joe Sedillot Collection." In a quaint tradition from the sixteenth century, the smaller silver denominations are without dates. This fifty réis (½ tostão) was accompanied by silver sixty réis (3 vinténs), eighty réis (tostão) and 120 réis (6 vinténs). The half tostão traded for fifty réis by government edict despite being marked "XXXX" and is catalogued as such in the SCWC. The practice did not end until the decimal reform of 1837. The larger silver coins were dated.

Recorded mintage: 10,000.

Specification: 1.47 g, 0.917 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM-350.
