Portugal SB118-24690r.jpg

This specimen was lot 24690 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it sold for $228. The catalog description[1] noted, "PORTUGAL. 60 Reis, ND (1816-26). NGC MS-66. A sparkling little gem. Sharply struck with soft satin luster and highly attractive." For some reason, Portugal struck the smaller silver denominations without dates. This sixty réis (3 vinténs) was accompanied by copper forty réis (pataco), silver fifty réis (half tostão), eighty réis (tostão) and 120 réis (6 vinténs, KM 353). The practice did not end until the decimal reform of 1837. The larger silver coins were dated.

Recorded mintage: unknown but common.

Specification: 1.83 g, 0.917 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM-351.
