Portugal 1816 120 reis rev 600.jpg

This specimen was lot 52421 in Heritage sale 419 (Long Beach, September 2006), where it sold for $92. The catalog description noted, "João VI 120 Reis (1816), MS63 NGC, medium toning, original and quite attractive." This type was struck 1816-26 without date. Varieties exist with plain cross and radiant cross on the crown. It was followed by issues for Peter IV (KM 376, 1826-28, very rare) and Michael I (KM 385, 1828-34). For some reason, Portugal struck the smaller silver denominations without dates. This 120 réis (6 vinténs) was accompanied by silver forty réis (pataco), fifty réis (half tostão), eighty réis (tostão) and sixty réis (3 vinténs, KM 351). The practice did not end until the decimal reform of 1837.

Recorded mintage: 93,636.

Specification: 3.7 g, 0.917 fine silver, 23.5 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM 353, Gomes-10.01.
