This specimen was lot 43270 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $1,560. The catalog description[1] noted, "PORTUGAL. 400 Reis, 1799. Lisbon Mint. Joao as Regent. PCGS MS-64. From the Stendebach Collection." This denomination was struck for both Maria I (KM 288) and her son João (KM-331, shown here) in 1799. The ones with the title of João were struck 1799-1801. In 1816, Maria finally died and João assumed the throne as king.
