Sincona sale 11. lot 2295

This specimen was lot 2295 in Sincona sale 11 (Zürich, May 2013), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"PORTUGAL Maria I. 1786-1799. Cruzado novo 1798. Sehr schön. (kingdom of Portugal, Maria I, 1786-99, cruzado novo (400 réis) of 1798, very fine.)"

This type was struck 1786-99 and was called a pinto. Despite the conspicuous "400" stamped on it, it was valued at 480 réis. It comes with high crown (shown here) and low crown varieties.

Recorded mintage: 1,376,187, a common date.

Specification: 14.7 g, 0.917 fine silver, 36 mm diameter; this specimen 14.82 g.
