Portugal 1793 400 reis
This specimen was lot 34901 in Heritage sale 3067 (Long Beach, September 2018), where it sold for $900. The catalog description[1] noted, "Portugal: Maria I 400 Reis 1793 MS66 NGC. Currently ranking at the top of the NGC census, this amber and champagne-tinged specimen fuses graphite fields with a pleasantly mottled tone and silver rays around the legends in a show of visual beauty. From the Feeling Good Collection." This type was struck 1786-99 and was called a pinto. Despite the conspicuous "400" stamped on it, it was valued at 480 réis. It comes with high crown (shown here) and low crown varieties. Altho Davenport assigned it a number, it is only half the weight of a thaler or crown.
Recorded mintage: unknown but a common date.
