This type was struck 1791-92 and 1797-99. In the old, predecimal system, 20 réis = 1 vintém, 24 vinténs = 1 cruzado and 1600 réis = 1 escudo. Portuguese copper coins of the 1700's turn up occasionally but are generally in poor condition after several centuries of circulation. The second specimen was lot 1102 in Stephen Album internet sale 28 (Santa Rosa, CA, July 2024), where it sold for $600. The catalog description[2] noted, "PORTUGAL: Maria I, 1777-1799, AE 5 reis, 1799, a lovely original coin, PCGS graded MS62 RB, ex Joe Sedillot Collection."
