This specimen was lot 74456 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $80. The catalog description[1] noted, "PORTUGAL. 1/2 Tostao (50 Reis), 1642. Lisbon Mint. Joao IV. PCGS Genuine--Environmental Damage, EF Details. Darkly toned and exhibiting a small flan flaw on the obverse, but otherwise a nicely detailed and pleasing dated issue." This type was struck 1641-42 in the first years after Portugal regained her independence from Spain in 1640. This denomination was struck in silver until 1811, when the copper pataco was introduced.
