This specimen was lot 30117 in Heritage sale 3094 (Chicago, August 2021), where it sold for $960. The catalog description[1] noted, "Portugal: João IV 400 Reis ND (1642) MS62 NGC, Lisbon mint, Unusually well-preserved, with even pewter surfaces finished in a mottled lilac undercurrent, with apparent striking weakness limiting the coin's visual appeal. Despite this, the present selection finds itself one of the finest Lisbon 400 Reis from the reign of João IV, with only a single certified higher, and sure to entice quality-minded collectors of early Portuguese coins. From the Cape Coral Collection of Spain and Latin America." João IV was the first Portuguese king after the Spanish were expelled in 1640. Hammered coins were produced at Porto, Lisbon and Évora, with Lisbon being the most available. Davenport lists these coins in his catalogs of European crowns for lack of anything larger; the coins are too small to be true crowns. Milled coinage was introduced in the 1680's.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 0.917 fine silver, this specimen 20.88 g.

Catalog reference: KM 52, Dav-4380, Gomes-97.04.
