Sincona sale 100, lot 1083

This specimen was lot 1083 in Sincona Auction 100 (Zürich, October 2025), where it sold for 26,000 CHF (about US$39,187 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"PORTUGAL, João IV. 1640-1656. 3000 Reis / 4 Cruzados 1642, Lissabon. IOANNES IIII D G REX PORTVGAL Gekröntes Wappen. Rv. IN . HOC . SIGNO . VIN . CES Kreuz, in den Winkeln die Ziffern der Jahreszahl. Sehr selten, besonders in dieser Erhaltung. Das durch NGC höchstbewertete Exemplar. (kingdom of Portugal, John IV, 1640-56, 3000 réis or four cruzados of 1642, Lisbon mint. Obverse: crowned arms; reverse: cross of St. George cantonned with the date. Very rare, especially in this condition. NGC MS63, Finest certified by NGC.)"

This type was struck 1642 only, with the legend ("IN·HOC+") beginning at 9 o'clock (KM 57) or at 12 o'clock (KM 60). João IV was the first king of Portugal after the Spanish were expelled in 1640.
