This specimen was lot 47517 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "PORTUGAL. 200 Reis (1/2 Cruzado), ND (1640-56). Évora Mint. Joao IV. PCGS Genuine--Environmental Damage, AU Details. Despite the unfortunate damage, this example retains much eye appeal and very limited impingement of the overall details." João IV was the first Portuguese king after the Spanish were expelled in 1640. Hammered coins were produced at Porto, Lisbon and Évora, with Lisbon being the most available. Milled coinage was introduced in the 1680's.
