This specimen was part of lot 36140 in Heritage sale 3038 (Dallas, January 2015), which sold for $2,820. The catalog description[1] noted, "Twenty-three piece lot of Portugal and Colonies, (ca. 1521-1930) as follows, issues from Angola, Brazil, Mozambique, Portugal, Portuguese India, and St. Thomas and Prince. Included are (2) Portugal gold coins, 400 Reis 1736 and 2,000 Reis 1859, as well as several other scarce and rare issues. Grades from VG to AU. A lot that demands close inspection, but promises good benefit from those willing to spend the time to view. A very few pieces with cleaning, or slight problems." Like many early Portuguese coins, this specimen is not dated, and can only be attributed to ruler. The tostão was eighty réis.
