SB823-55718r.jpg

This specimen was lot 55718 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $144. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Pomerania. Swedish Dominion. 1/3 Taler, 1674-DS. Stettin Mint. Karl XI (of Sweden). PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, AU Details. Struck during the period of Swedish occupation of Pomerania. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." Another rare issue from this Baltic state. On the lapse of the dynasty in 1637, the duchy was contested between Sweden and Brandenburg until they agreed to partition it by the Peace of Westphalia in 1648. As Sweden gradually weakened, Brandenburg (later Prussia) gradually nibbled away at the Swedish portion until the remainder was seized in 1815. This one-third thaler was one of several (KM 260, KM 262, KM 263, KM 268) minted in 1674. This denomination was to become very popular in northern Germany.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: KM-260.
