Stack's Bowers sale of the L. E. Bruun Collection, lot 1253
SB924-1253r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1253 in Stack's Bowers sale of the L. E. Bruun Collection (Copenhagen, September 2024), where it sold for €43,200 (about US$47,874 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Alluring Mint State Taler from the Swedish Occupation of Pomerania, SWEDEN. Pomerania. Taler, 1675. Szczecin Mint. Karl XI. NGC MS-61. Mintmaster: Daniel Syvertz (DS). The obverse is tinged with golden hues and the reverse, with its rich imagery, the casually reclining hairy wild men, and where every little detail is so exquisitely well-preserved, truly makes this is a masterpiece of artistry. A very rarely traded coin in immaculate condition. Ex: Countship of Brahesminde Collection (Private Sale - 1922)"

On the lapse of the native dynasty in 1637, the duchy of Pomerania was contested between Sweden and Brandenburg until they agreed to partition it by the Peace of Westphalia in 1648. As Sweden gradually weakened, Brandenburg (later Prussia) gradually nibbled away at the Swedish portion until the remainder was seized in 1815.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 28.98 g.
