SB1122-74741r.jpg

This specimen was lot 74741 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $192. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Pomerania. 1/3 Taler, 1673-DS. Stettin Mint. Karl XI of Sweden. PCGS EF-45. Also valued as a 1/2 Gulden. Struck during the period of Swedish occupation of Pomerania. Slate gray toning with a strong portrait of this important Swedish king. One planchet crack at 11 o'clock noted for accuracy. A seldom encountered one year type." Another rare issue from this Baltic state. On the lapse of the dynasty in 1637, the duchy was contested between Sweden and Brandenburg until they agreed to partition it by the Peace of Westphalia in 1648. As Sweden gradually weakened, Brandenburg (later Prussia) gradually nibbled away at the Swedish portion until the remainder was seized in 1815. This type was struck 1673-74, along with KM 264 (2/3 thaler).

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: KM-260.
