Pomerania 1674-DS 1/3 thaler KM-262
This specimen was lot 22628 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it sold for $336. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Pomerania. 1/3 Taler, 1674-DS. Karl XI (1660-97). PCGS MS-63 Secure Holder. Bold in the centers with bright luster in the fields and a sprinkling of tan tone on both sides. A touch of peripheral softness quite possibly prevented an even higher grade." Another rare issue from this Baltic state. On the lapse of the dynasty in 1637, the duchy was contested between Sweden and Brandenburg until they agreed to partition it by the Peace of Westphalia in 1648. As Sweden gradually weakened, Brandenburg (later Prussia) gradually nibbled away at the Swedish portion until the remainder was seized in 1815. This one-third thaler was one of several (KM 260, KM 262, KM 263, KM 268) minted in 1674. This denomination was to become very popular in northern Germany.
