Pomerania 1655 thaler Dav-4577
This specimen was lot 41389 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2019), where it sold for $3,840. The catalog description[1] noted, "SWEDEN. Pomerania. Riksdaler, 1655. Karl X Gustaf (1654-60). NGC AU-55. Elusive and highly desirable as a type, this piece exhibits surfaces that are attractively toned and without major instance of contact. The strike, nearing completion, is only soft on a small portion of Karl X Gustaf's head as well as the corresponding area on the reverse. Highly exciting as the only example of the type to appear in a major American auction in over a decade. From the Collection of Dr. James Eustace Bizzell, II. Ex: Grundy Collection. Ex: Ran Zander Collection." This is the only thaler this king issued for his domain in Pomerania, on the northern shores of Germany. On the lapse of the native dynasty in 1637, the duchy was contested between Sweden and Brandenburg until they agreed to partition it by the Peace of Westphalia in 1648. As Sweden gradually weakened, Brandenburg (later Prussia) gradually nibbled away at the Swedish portion until the remainder was seized in 1815.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
