Künker sale 406, lot 4090

This specimen was lot 4090 in Künker sale 406 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €2,600 (about US$3,412 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ANHALT-ZERBST, FÜRSTENTUM, Carl Wilhelm, 1667-1718. 1/3 Taler 1674, Zerbst. Münzmeister Christoph Pflug. Von großer Seltenheit. Feine Patina, winz. Schrötlingsfehler am Rand, sehr schön +. (principality of Anhalt-Zerbst, Charles William, 1667-1718, one-third thaler of 1674, Zerbst mint. Extremely rare, fine patina, minor edge flaws, very fine or better.)"

Joachim Ernst united all the splinters of Anhalt but died in 1586. His seven sons ruled Anhalt jointly until 1603, when the five surviving brothers partitioned it once again. The new principalities were Anhalt-Bernburg, Anhalt-Dessau, Anhalt-Kothen, Anhalt-Plötzkau and Anhalt-Zerbst. Anhalt-Dessau lasted the longest, surviving until 1918. Anhalt-Zerbst was a state of utmost insignificance except one of its daughters grew up to be Catherine the Great of Russia. This type was struck 1674-75 along with a gulden.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 9,44 g.

Catalog reference: KM 17, Mann 254.
