This specimen was lot 4091 in Künker sale 406 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €4,200 (about US$5,511 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ANHALT-ZERBST, FÜRSTENTUM, Carl Wilhelm, 1667-1718. Reichstaler 1680, auf den Tod seiner Mutter Sophia Augusta von Schleswig-Holstein, Tochter von Herzog Friedrich III. Ein von der Sonne bestrahlter und von Winden umgebener Fels im Meer, vorne am Felsen das Monogramm der Fürstin, oben ein Herz, l. Segelschiff//15 Zeilen Schrift. R Hübsche Patina, min. (principality of Anhalt-Zerbst, Charles William, 1667-1718, thaler of 1680, on the death of his mother Sophia Augusta von Schleswig-Holstein, daughter of duke Friedrich III. Obverse: A rock in the sea illuminated by the sun and surrounded by winds, the monogram of the princess on the front of the rock, a heart at the top, a ship sails at left; reverse: 15 line inscription. Rare, handsome patina, minor planchet defects, extremely fine.)"

Joachim Ernst united all the splinters of Anhalt but died in 1586. His seven sons ruled Anhalt jointly until 1603, when the five surviving brothers partitioned it once again. The new principalities were Anhalt-Bernburg, Anhalt-Dessau, Anhalt-Kothen, Anhalt-Plötzkau and Anhalt-Zerbst. Anhalt-Dessau lasted the longest, surviving until 1918. Anhalt-Zerbst was a state of utmost insignificance except one of its daughters grew up to be Catherine the Great of Russia. This type was struck 1680 only and is very rare.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 28,68 g.
