Künker Auction 425, lot 2209

This specimen was lot 2209 in Künker Auction 425 (Osnabrück, July 2025), where it sold for €16,000 (about US$22,656 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHE MÜNZEN UND MEDAILLEN · JEVER, HERRSCHAFT Carl Wilhelm von Anhalt-Zerbst, 1667-1718. Reichstaler 1676, Jever. CARL WILH : P . A . C . A . D . S . B . I . & . K . Brustbild r. mit langen Haaren und umgelegtem Mantel//IN DOMINO FIDUCIA NOSTRA Zwölffeldiges Wappen unter Fürstenkrone, zu den Seiten die geteilte Jahreszahl 16 - 76 und die geteilte Signatur C - P (Christian Pfahler, Münzmeister in Jever 1675-1691). Von großer Seltenheit. Hübsche Patina, kl. Schrötlingsfehler, sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Germany, lordship of Jever, Charles William of Anhalt-Zerbst, 1667-1718, thaler of 1676, Jever mint. Obverse: draped bust right with long hair; reverse: twelve-fold arms under a princely crown dividing the date and initials. Extremely rare, handsome patina, small planchet defects, very fine to extremely fine.)"

This is a very rare type from an oscure state on the North Sea. The lordship of Jever, then of little economic value, was part of the county of Oldenburg and was ruled by the counts until the death of Anton Gunther in 1667. Oldenburg passed to Denmark while Jever went to Anhalt-Zerbst, whose prince, Johann Rudolf, also died in 1667. Anhalt-Zerbst held Jever until the line fell extinct in 1793, when it passed to Catherine the Great of Russia. Jever remained Russian territory until 1807, when it was seized by Napoleon. Russia held it again 1813-18 but eventually traded it back to the Oldenburgs.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 28,73 g.

Catalog reference: KM 25 (listed under Anhalt-Zerbst), Merzdorf -; Mann 243; Dav-6032 (listed under Anhalt).
