Künker sale 406, lot 4224

This specimen was lot 4224 in Künker sale 406 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €2,600 (about US$3,412 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"JEVER, HERRSCHAFT, Johann Rudolf von Anhalt-Zerbst, 1667. Reichstaler 1667, Jever, auf seinen Tod. Attraktives Exemplar mit hübscher Patina, sehr schön-vorzüglich. (lordship of Jever, John Rudolf of Anhalt-Zerbst, 1667, thaler of 1667, Jever mint, on his death. Attractive example with handsome patina, very fine to extremely fine.)"

The lordship of Jever, then of little economic value, was part of the county of Oldenburg and was ruled by the counts until the death of Anton Gunther in 1667. Oldenburg passed to Denmark while Jever went to Anhalt-Zerbst, whose prince, Johann Rudolf, also died in 1667. Anhalt-Zerbst held Jever until the line fell extinct in 1793, when it passed to Catherine the Great of Russia. Jever remained Russian territory until 1807, when it was seized by Napoleon. Russia held it again 1813-18 but eventually traded it back to the Oldenburgs. This thaler commemorates Johann Rudolf's death. The SCWC lists this under Anhalt-Zerbst but notes the mating half thaler (KM 66) under Jever.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 28,68 g.

Catalog reference: KM 15 (listed under Anhalt-Zerbst), Dav-6031; Mann 236; Merzdorf 84.
