This specimen was lot 72510 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2020), where it sold for $216. The catalog description[1] noted, "PHILIPPINES. Quarto, 1828-M F. Manila Mint. Ferdinand VII. PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, Fine Details Gold Shield. Small thin lion, large lettes, no lower bar on "F" to left of date, no cross bar on "A" of "VTRA" or "H" of "HISP". An interesting variety with lots of character exhibiting an uneven strike and a rotated (about 100 degree[s] counterclockwise) reverse die. Light signs of being cleaned long ago now mostly toned over and attractive. Overall a presentable example of the variety certain to catch the attention of the specialist." The Manila mint, little better than a smithy prior to the 1860's, struck a series of copper issues in the 1820's and 1830's. They are not particularly rare but very difficult to find in collectible condition being crudely made and harshly used. This type was struck 1817-33.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specifications: copper.

Catalog reference: Cayón-14818, KM-7; Basso-33b.
