Philippines 1829-M F quarto
This specimen was lot 21262 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $4,320. The catalog description[1] noted, "PHILIPPINES. Quarto, 1829-M F. Manila Mint. Ferdinand VII. PCGS AU-55 Brown Gold Shield. The single finest certified of the date on the PCGS population report only surpassed by a single example graded NGC AU-58 with a total population of 2 pieces in ALMOST UNCIRCULATED condition for the date. VERY RARE in this state of preservation. A nicely centered but slightly weak central strike, nevertheless in a very good condition for the type with lovely mottled reddish-brown color in the open fields complemented by milk chocolate patina atop of the devices. A nice wholesome and fully original example of the type in far better condition than normally encountered sure to pique the interest of even the most advanced of collectors." The Manila mint, little better than a smithy prior to the 1860's, struck a series of copper issues in the 1820's and 1830's. They are not particularly rare but very difficult to find in collectible condition being crudely made and harshly used. This type was struck 1817-33.
