Philippines 1826-M F quarto
The first specimen was lot 72508 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2020), where it sold for $132. The catalog description[1] noted,
"PHILIPPINES. Quarto, 1826-M F. Manila Mint. Ferdinand VII. PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, Fine Details Gold Shield. Small lions and globes, large letters and large elongated stars. A well worn example of the type displaying signs of being cleaned long ago, now exhibiting mottled brown patina. Nice central obverse design features with a bold full four digit date below while the reverse is more uneven in wear. Overall a presentable example of the type for the collector on a budget sure to be a welcome addition to the next collection it enters."
The second specimen was lot 73023 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2023), where it sold for $100. The catalog description[2] noted, "PHILIPPINES. Quarto, 1826-M F. Manila Mint. Ferdinand VII. PCGS Genuine--Environmental Damage, VF Details. Despite the noted faults, this example retains much appeal as an elusive issue." The Manila mint, little better than a smithy prior to the 1860's, struck a series of copper issues in the 1820's and 1830's. They are not particularly rare but very difficult to find in collectible condition being crudely made and harshly used. This type was struck 1817-33.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specifications: copper.
