Aureo sale 238, lot 268

This specimen was lot 268 in Aureo & Calicó sale 238 (Barcelona, November 2011), where it sold for 1,000 euro (about US$1,586 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1828. Manila. 8 reales. Acuñada sobre una pieza de Perú, Lima JM de 1828. Golpecitos. Muy rara. (MBC+). (Eight reales of 1828, Manila counterstamp on 1828 eight reales of Peru. Rim nicks, very rare, choice very fine.)"

The authorities in Manila used this counterstamp for a brief period in 1828 to validate incoming pesos for circulation in the Philippines. This does not seem to have been a success so a simple "F-7o" was used after 1832. The SCWC[2] notes, "Countermarking of foreign coins was halted in Manila by the edict of March 31, 1837 after Spain had recognized the independence of Mexico, Peru, Colombia, Bolivia, Chile and other former colonies in Central and South America."

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.903 fine silver.

Catalog reference: Cayón-16101, Cal. 534, KM 25.
