Peru 1821-L JP 2 escudos
This specimen was lot 1258 in Sedwick Auction 37 (Winter Park, FL, May 2025), where it sold for $1,800. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU, Lima, gold bust 2 escudos, Ferdinand VII, 1821 JP, large bust, rare, NGC VF 20, finest and only example in NGC census, ex-Almenara. Slightly off-center strike on broad flan with full rims, rich reddish toning over muted luster, weak bust (otherwise more like XF), desirable final year of colonial issue from this mint. Pedigreed to the Almenara Collection." In 1812-13, the Lima mint struck two escudos using the draped bust punch intended for the silver one real. In 1814, the bare bust (shown here) was adopted and used until the end of colonial issues in 1821. All dates are scarce to rare. Assayer JP is recorded for 1803-23.
