Peru 1821-L JP 4 reales
This specimen was lot 1159 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 28 (Winter Park, FL, November 2020), where it sold for $420. The catalog description[1] noted, "Lima, Peru, bust 4 reales, Ferdinand VII, 1821JP, ex-Jones. Deeply rainbow-toned AU- (mostly blue, with golden highlights around details), muted luster, very pretty overall, final date of type. Pedigreed to the Dr. Peter Jones collection." The second specimen was lot 72120 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $216. The catalog description[2] noted, "PERU. 4 Reales, 1821-L JP. Lima Mint. Ferdinand VII. PCGS Genuine--Scratch, AU Details. Though marred by a handful of scratches across the obverse, this 4 Reales piece nevertheless offers lovely toning that blooms with hues of orange and blue and a reverse bursting with details. From the Pat Johnson Collection." This specimen is one of a series struck 1811-21 during the reign of Ferdinand VII (1808-33). As a class, colonial coinage of Peru is much less plentiful than that of Mexico, tho it is more available than the remaining mints. However, Harris[3] noted finding about one-fourth as many Peruvian four reales of Charles IV as that of Mexico, so it is safe to say that this type is scarce. Assayer "JP" is noted for the years 1803-23.
