H3094-33276r.jpg

This specimen was lot 33276 in Heritage sale 3094 (Chicago, August 2021), where it sold for $16,200. The catalog description[1] noted, "Peru: Philip V gold Cob Escudo 1703 L-H MS66 NGC, Lima mint. A captivating and wonderfully simple type, this small gold Cob Escudo displays fully embossed motifs and almost no evidence of handling, likely having been lost or set aside at the outset of issue. This piece exhibits well-centered designs and fully discernible details, a feature atypical of contemporary circulating issues. As a premium Gem Mint State survivor, this piece is not only the finest Lima-minted Escudo, both milled and Cob types, but is tied for the second-finest Spanish colonial Escudo with only five others, all of Mexican origin, with two MS67 "Royal" issues higher, out of nearly 1,000 pieces certified between both grading services. Impressive to say the least, and truly worthy of an advanced collection. From the Long Island Collection." This type was struck in Lima, Peru, 1701-44; the date 1703 is listed for one, two and eight escudos cobs. Gold coins from colonial Peru are much scarcer than those from Colombian mints. Assayer H is recorded for 1701-10.

Recorded mintage: 344.

Specification: 3.38 g, 0.917 fine gold, this specimen 3.35 g.
