This specimen was lot 47 in Sedwick Auction 37 (Winter Park, FL, May 2025), where it sold for $11,400. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU, Lima, gold cob 1 escudo, 1699 R, rare, NGC AU 55, ex-Almenara. Atypically broad flan with full but off-center castle side, nice full cross, traces of toning and sediment. Pedigreed to the Almenara Collection (stated on label)." This type is recorded for 1696-1701 and all dates are rare with tiny mintages. This is the only date for assayer R. The Mexico City mint was converted to milled coinage in 1732-34 but Lima would not follow suit until 1751.
