Peru 1698-L H escudo
This specimen was lot 44272 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it sold for $4,320. The catalog description[1] noted,
"The Short-Lived Castle Cob Type, PERU. Cob Escudo, 1698-L H. Lima Mint. Charles II. PCGS AU-58. Emanating from a VERY RARE and exceptionally brief series, this cob issue departs from the usual obverse iconography of various monarchs, opting instead for a more spartan design in the form of a simple castle--usually merely a single element among many in the complex coat-of-arms of Spain. Well centered and pleasingly struck, with parts of all three date numerals in the date clear. Elevating its desirability that much more is the high state of preservation and the added provenance. From the S.P. Rutherford Collection."
This type from Lima is recorded for 1696-1701. Assayer R is also recorded for this date. The Mexico City mint was converted to milled coinage in 1732-34 but Lima would not follow suit until 1751.
Recorded mintage: 575.
Specification: 3.38 g, 0.917 fine gold.
