Stack's Bowers October 2025 Collectors Choice sale, lot 74600

This specimen was lot 74600 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2025), where it sold for $288. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU. Cob Real, 1698-L H. Lima Mint. Charles II. PCGS VF-35. From the Richard August Collection." The regime in Madrid finally permitted the viceroy in Lima to reopen the mint in 1684. This type was struck 1684-1700 for the degenerate Charles II. Assayer Hurtado stamped his coins 1695-1710. A mint operated in Cuzco briefly in 1698 but seems to have struck only gold.
