Peru 1698-L H 8 escudos
This specimen was lot 30 in Sedwick Auction 37 (Winter Park, FL, May 2025), where it sold for $26,400. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU, Lima, gold cob 8 escudos, 1698 H, very rare, NGC AU 58, finest and only example in NGC census, Sedwick Plate, La Onza Plate. Bold full cross-lions-castles and pillars-and-waves (both slightly off-center), also with full crown and clear C.II in legend (slightly doubled at top-left of cross), some peripheral flatness, one of very few known of this date (much rarer than 1699) and desirably pedigreed. Plate Coin on page 83 of Sedwick's The Practical Book of Cobs (4th ed, 2007), and Plate Coin 111 on page 65 of Calicó's La Onza (2004)." This eight escudos was struck 1696-1701 in very limited numbers.
