Sedwick sale 25, lot 23

This specimen was lot 23 in Sedwick sale 25 (Winter Park, FL, May 2019), where it sold for $7,735. The catalog description[1] noted, "Lima, Peru, cob 4 escudos, 1699R, rare. Shaved around edge but with choice full cross-lions-castles and pillars-and-waves, XF with light toning, tiny edge-split. Pedigreed to our Auction #8 (lot #14)." This type is recorded for 1696-1701. All dates are rare. This is the only date for assayer R, who also issued two, four and eight reales, one and eight escudos.

Recorded mintage: 1,636.

Specification: 13.54 g, 0.917 fine gold, .399 troy oz AGW, this specimen 12.89 grams.
