Sedwick sale 25, lot 25

This specimen was lot 25 in Sedwick sale 25 (Winter Park, FL, May 2019), where it sold for $9,520. The catalog description[1] noted, "Lima, Peru, cob 2 escudos, 1703/2H, rare, NGC MS 63, finest and only example in NGC census, ex-1715 Fleet (designated on label). Lustrous and choice, with well-detailed full cross-lions-castles and pillars-and-waves, excellent full crown, much legend. NGC #4717848-001. From the 1715 Fleet." The type was struck in Lima, Peru, 1701-44; many dates are not listed. Gold coins from colonial Peru are much scarcer than those from Colombian mints. Assayer H is recorded for 1696-1709.
