Peru 1704-L H 2 escudos
This specimen was lot 25 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 27 (Winter Park, FL, May 2020), where it sold for $9,520. The catalog description[1] noted, "Lima, Peru, cob 2 escudos, 1704H, rare, NGC AU 58, ex-1715 Fleet (designated on special label), finest and only example in NGC census. Broad flan with bold full details (especially the crown and cross-lions-castles) enhanced with deep red toning, minor high-point wear. NGC #4762817-001. From the 1715 Fleet." Cob two escudos were struck at the Lima mint 1701-44 for Philip V of Spain and became the "pistoles" of pirate lore. Gold coins from colonial Peru are much scarcer than those from Colombian mints. Assayer H is recorded for 1696-1709.
